Hi all
I would agree with comments that Spotted Turtledoves (henceforth
SPTDs below) are doing rather well at the moment. It is one of the
species I see most frequently, and certainly seems as numerous as
ever, if not more so. Of course, I haven't any data to backup this
claim - it's just a feeling.
I'm waiting for the day (any day now) when I add something really
SPECIAL to my garden (or backyard) list. This one will beat Swift
Parrot, Gang Gang Cocaktoo, Peregrine Falcon, Brown Goshawk hands
down as the best thing I've seen FROM my garden: Humpback Whale!
There are a couple of Humpbacks - some reports say M/F, others mother
& calf - enjoying Corio Bay at the moment. Everywhere I've driven
along the bay near Geelong in the last few days has had dozens of
people lined up and looking out across the water, the nearest thing
I've seen to a cetacean twitch.
I can see the bay from quite a few spots where I live - that's if I
count the whole boarding school campus as 'my garden' - so I hope
the whales do the right thing and turn up while I'm at one of them.
They have been seen close to the school, near the entrance to
Limeburner's Lagoon. I'm sure Rod Gardiner has whales on his
'garden' list already, as he lives near one of the points often
mentioned in his despatches. Anybody seen a whale in their
backyard????
