A friend of mine who is a registered wildlife carer recieved a call
yesterday from the Rye Bowling Club(Mornington Peninsula,Vic) They had what
they thought was an eagle sitting on their bowling green and it appeared to
be injured. It turned out to be a Great Skua and she took it to the local
vet who treated it for a leg injury. Unfortunately it died overnight and is
now in her freezer awaiting collection by the Melbourne museum.
The Bowling Club is some half a kilometre inland from the Port Phillip Bay
shoreline.It appeared to be in very good condition and the vet seemed to
think that it had a full stomach. I personally think that stress might be
a factor in the low survival rate of seabirds being cared for in captivity.
We have had a bit of a mini wreck here on the Mornington Peninsula during
the recent bad weather. There are lots of Prions and a few Common Diving
Petrels washed up on our beaches. Bett Mitchell.
