G'day All,
Over the past week I've received several appeals for help with
conservation issues, predominantly saving wildlife habitat in Brazil,
India, Japan and Portugal.
After reading some recent messages of Tim Capone on BIRDCHAT I felt
inspired that maybe the time was right to create an organization
(website?) which could give assistance to those fighting these difficult
battles on a global basis.
My train of thought goes something like this, an email is received
requesting people to send messages of concern to those
politicians/businesspersons involved in 'developments'. This plea is
then published on the website where we have also created a form whereby
any reader can add his name to a pre-formatted letter of concern and
submit it. This would involve the minimum effort by the concerned
birder/naturalist yet reach the target recipients and hopefully sway
their decision towards a positive outcome for the environment.
I know most readers of the various birding mailing-lists would like to
do more to help in this issues and therefore I am searching for ideas
from you.
Have you been involved in similar issues and conservation-based
websites, if so what helped?
Could we also start a conservation-based mailing-list?
What are the legal issues?
Language problems (the website appealing for help with the brazilian
rainforest issue was in portugese....I had to consult a translation site
to find out what the form requirements were)
Any experience with web-page creation? (especially forms)
If you think you can help out and what details of the specific issues
mentioned above, (I'm mainly appealing to birders but if any other
wildlife interest groups want to join in please do) contact me on
Remember species (like Greater Adjutant involved in the Indian Wildlife
Sanctuary AND RAMSAR site de-notification) are disappearing at an
alarming rate yet I'm sure we can do something about it!
Look forward to hearing from you,
