Hello
Everyone.
Today, Janis and I did The Regent
Honeyeater Survey You have When There Aren't Any Regents. (We did
look for Swift Parrots too Simon, but didn't even hope to see
these.)
We surveyed through the Goonoo State
Forest and the Cobbora District - in central western NSW, near Dubbo.
As compensation for the lack of Regents
we had some other interesting sightings.
* 2 Magpie Larks - in the middle of the
forest & almost never seen within the forest.
* Two flocks of Sitellas - always
unusual in the forest (don't know why).
* Lots and lots of Jacky Winters - not
lots and lots of these anywhere around here
anymore.
* 2 pairs and one juvenile Glossy
Black-Cockatoo. Why weren't the females down a hollow and
on a nest? And the
youngster would have been around 6 months old... making it a
Christmas
Baby. Don't these birds know when
the breeding season starts and finishes? Don't they
read
their Field
Guides?
* When we went to check out the
Malleefowl mound we found that the bird had raked up a
long
windrow, and had started to fill
the empty mound with leaf litter. Poor beggar
obviously
thinks its July or August after
all of our unseasonal summer-autumn rains.
* Near Cobbora Station (about 15 kms N/W
of Dunedoo) we saw, perched on the tip top of a
tall gum tree a lone Cattle
Egret. Just a bit out of its usual range. I think it was perched
up there looking looking for
company... we couldn't see a cow, or sheep or horse
anywhere.
So, no Regents, but lotsa fun
anyway.
