I just received in the mail a funraising blurb from Birds Australia,
seeking to raise $670,000 to buy and run Newhaven Station in Central
Australia. I realise that there was a protracted debate on this list
re: the pros & cons of NGOs buying land for conservation, but my current
concern is about something else.
"... Once thought extinct, Night Parrots landed three metres from
trained observers at Newhaven in 1996. This record has been kept secret
since. ......."
I have no beef about secrecy if indeed there were Night Parrots seen at
Newhaven, however:
* Who were the trained observers?
* What kind of observing were they trained to do?
Newhaven looks like a fabulous spot from the pictures on the blurb. It'd
be nice to get a better idea of its conservation values though, other
than a tabloid style reference to NIGHT PARROTS SEEN .... There doesn't
appear to be anything on the BA web page yet about Newhaven.
