Since the passing of TC Rosita, Broome's Osprey population seem to have all
but disappeared. The only Osprey I have sighted since that time is the one
who sits forlornly atop the wooden lamp pole opposite their former roosting
spot and nest site on the WAWA tank and two-way transmitter aerials which
can be seen from Port Drive.
The sometime occupants of the mobile crane at the Port and the Fishing Club
aerial are no longer to be seen, also the occupants of the nest site at the
end of the wharf are conspicuous by their absence.
The most noticeable dearth of Osprey from their usual roosting spot though
are the two radio aerials in the Paspaley Boatshed yards at the northern end
of Dampier Terrace.
I pass these on my way to and from work four times a day and it is unusual
not to see at least one Osprey on them, usually there are two, sometimes
three, on several occasions there have been four birds there, and once there
were five Osprey crowded onto the two masts.
My question's are, is it normal for Osprey to disappear after a cyclonic
disturbance and do they come back and if so what would be the time span
before they re-appear, given that all the raptor and other species that were
here before the cyclone are still with us.
