Report on NSWFOC Central Coast Group Outing: Weekend Camp-out at Gloucester 29-30 April, leader Lorraine Johnstone

15 people met at Gloucester (32 03', 152 00') Stock saleyards on Saturday morning for a weekend of great birding and wonderful fine sunny weather in the Gloucester area, the new home of our leader Lorraine. We began by checking out the wetlands and paddocks of East Gloucester where 6 Shovellers, Cisticola, Plumed & Great Egret, White-necked Heron, Pelican, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Butcherbird, Kestrel & Pipit were the order of the day. At our lunch spot at the park in the centre of town was an Azure Kingfisher, Rufous Night-heron, plenty of Torresian Crows & Australian Ravens, White-headed Pigeons, a Satin Bowerbird & its bower in the Soldiers Memorial Grove, while a Peregrine Falcon, circled overhead. During the afternoon we visited the Ken & Mary-Anne Johnson’s property "Misty Ridge" Maudsville, where Jacky Winter, Double-barred Finch, Brown Gerygone, Tree Martin, Large-billed & Yellow-throated Scrub-wrens were some of the birds seen. Migrating Yellow-faced & White-naped Honeyeaters and Silveryes flew over and we saw 2 Wedge-tailed Eagles and their nest. Grey-crowned Babblers & Brown Falcons were seen near Berrico. On Sunday morning we visited the rainforest of Copeland Flora Reserve but saw only the usual suspects but did get a Wonga Pigeon. In Copeland SF there were Fantailed Cuckoo, plenty of Golden Whistlers, Brown Cuckoo-Dove and Scrub-turkey. We finished our weekend with lunch at the Cobark River Picnic Area where Rose & Southern Yellow Robins, Wedge-tailed Eagle were watched while we ate and a Restless Flycatcher & Brown Goshawk were found. 85 species were seen during the 2 days and 11 Bird Atlas Sheets completed for 7 ten minute blocks (Alan Morris).
