Report on NSWFOC Central Coast Group Outing: Weekend Camp-out
at Gloucester 29-30 April, leader Lorraine Johnstone
15 people met at Gloucester (32 03', 152 00') Stock saleyards
on Saturday morning for a weekend of great birding and wonderful fine sunny
weather in the Gloucester area, the new home of our leader Lorraine. We began by
checking out the wetlands and paddocks of East Gloucester where 6
Shovellers, Cisticola, Plumed & Great Egret,
White-necked Heron, Pelican, Black-winged Stilt, Pied
Butcherbird, Kestrel & Pipit were the order of the day. At
our lunch spot at the park in the centre of town was an Azure Kingfisher,
Rufous Night-heron, plenty of Torresian Crows & Australian
Ravens, White-headed Pigeons, a Satin Bowerbird & its
bower in the Soldiers Memorial Grove, while a Peregrine Falcon, circled
overhead. During the afternoon we visited the Ken & Mary-Anne Johnson’s
property "Misty Ridge" Maudsville, where Jacky Winter, Double-barred
Finch, Brown Gerygone, Tree Martin, Large-billed &
Yellow-throated Scrub-wrens were some of the birds seen. Migrating
Yellow-faced & White-naped Honeyeaters and Silveryes
flew over and we saw 2 Wedge-tailed Eagles and their nest.
Grey-crowned Babblers & Brown Falcons were seen near Berrico. On
Sunday morning we visited the rainforest of Copeland Flora Reserve but saw only
the usual suspects but did get a Wonga Pigeon. In Copeland SF there were
Fantailed Cuckoo, plenty of Golden Whistlers, Brown
Cuckoo-Dove and Scrub-turkey. We finished our weekend with lunch at
the Cobark River Picnic Area where Rose & Southern Yellow
Robins, Wedge-tailed Eagle were watched while we ate and a
Restless Flycatcher & Brown Goshawk were found. 85 species
were seen during the 2 days and 11 Bird Atlas Sheets completed for 7 ten minute
blocks (Alan Morris).
