My understanding is that legal indiscriminate poisoning of (alleged) pest
cockatoos in Victoria by anything at hand (such as organophosphate
pesticides) will be ended and that permits will be revoked, while trapping
and gassing will continue, possibly in an expanded program.
Ending the poisoning is a big plus, especially since it threatened many
other species of bird and mammal, and the Victorian Government should be
congratulated for deciding to do this. The trapping and gassing is another
matter; at least it is relatively humane and target selective, but is not
likely to be a complete, or even reasonably effective, solution to the
perceived problem of crop damage. We can do better than this, and I hope
we can persuade the Victorian and other state governments to move towards
non-lethal control methods.
