In my recent time in Townsville the colony on the Ross River had grown to
over 3000 birds, breeding during summer in the mangroves with White Ibis,
Straw-necked Ibis, Great Egrets, Intermediate Egrets, Little Egrets and
Royal Spoonbills.

After breeding all the birds would disappear for winter, where they went,
no-one seemed to know. It was thought it was Atherton Tablelands but we
never got around to a tagging project to find out. There may be even more
there now as it is two years since I've been there.
