On the Labour Day long weekend, a group of 6 of us took 4-day weekend
and went canoe camping in the Lower Glenelg National Park in far
southwestern Victoria near Nelson (10-13 March 2000). The canoeing trip
of 43km was broken up into stages (14km, 12km, 10km, 7km), and took us
from the Moleside Creek/Glenelg River confluence near the top of the
park downstream to Donovans in South Australia.

Two of us were birders and atlassed around canoe camps at Skipworth
Springs (38°03'16"S 141°11'22"E), Deutschers (38°01'37"S 141°06'09"E)
and Lasletts (37°59'47"S 141°00'55"E), and at the Princess Margaret Rose
Caves (2.5km west of Lasletts).

Lower Glenelg is very near the western limit for species such as
Gang-gang Cockatoo, Rose Robin, Powerful Owl, Azure Kingfisher, Eastern
Yellow Robin, Satin Flycatcher, Olive Whistler, Pied Currawong and
Forest Raven (all of which we recorded on the trip). Highlights
included all of these, as well as a Masked Owl heard at Lasletts, a
Southern Brown Bandicoot snuffling around the campsite at Lasletts, lots
of Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos drifting overhead throughout the trip,
White-throated Needletails at Skipworth and Lasletts, Australian
Owlet-nightjars serenading us at Lasletts, Rufous Bristlebirds at
various spots, Bassian Thrushes, etc. The common corvid in this area is
the Forest Raven, and we recorded them everywhere along the way from
Moleside to Donovans (identified by voice and appearance). Only one
Australian Raven was heard between Deutchers and Lasletts.

A very interesting park, and a great way to travel through it.

A list of birds and other fauna by site follows (by Lawrie Conole and
Scott Chandry). This is a tabulated table, and to view the table
properly with columns aligned, you may need to copy and paste it into a
word processor or text editor, then format it with a fixed-width font
such as Courier (about 10 pitch should do).
