Dear Birders,

A few weeks ago there was some discussion concerning Great Crested Grebes and their distribution and numbers. Just before Christmas last year I went on the river boat cruise from Nelson (SW Victoria) up the Lower Glenelg River to the Princess Margaret Rose caves.

Along the river I observed a total of about 9 GCGs, the greatest congregation of this species I have seen. The tour operator commented that there had been none on the river only several years ago but that they are there all the time now.

Two were seen on the stretch of river near the bridge, right in the middle of the town with a lot of busy river traffic all around.

Happy Birding,
