Today I had a White-Throated Needletail crash into my fire tower. This stunned
the bird and knocked it too the ground. By the time I got the ground to see
whether it was alright, it came to its senses and was able to fly away. On
mentioning this to another fire spotter, I got another story on WTN deaths
induced
by fire towers. This crash was last season and involved the Mt Waldron Tower
near Cann River.
After a discussion we came up with 2 questions.
1. Do WTN crash into each other?
2. How do we get them to pose for a photo?
In response to your last message I hit delete instead of reply, so here is a
response. I had 60 plus WTN around the tower on Boxing Day. They are pretty
difficult to count when some are well up in the sky and others are wooshing
by a metre from your head. The most common time they are around is 10.30 in
the morning, but they do not have a set schedule on when they are going to
distract
me from doing their job.
