Hello to all!

The first week in December the Bird Observers' Club of Australia held its
annual birdcount. Teams from around Australia took part. It was over a
twenty four hour period or part thereof. One of the rules were that the
birds had to be within a 40 milometre radius of a given point. A team from
Northern Victoria, centred on Cohuna, counted 157 species within a radius of
Cohuna this year. It was a pleasant, warm day, with some wind - the birds
obviously were out and about. Some of the highlights were Lewin's Rail,
Black Honeyeater, White-winged Fairy-wrens (26 seen),White-backed Swallows,
Black Falcon, Black-eared Cuckoo, Blue-billed Ducks, Great Crested Grebes,
Cockatiels, Budgerigars and our regular, though special birds of the area
such as Gilbert's Whistler, Crested Shrike-tit, Black-chinned Honeyeaters,
Southern Whiteface, Hooded Robins etc. We dipped out on some fairly common
birds, such as the Peregrine Falcon, Buff-rumped and Chestnut-rumped
Thornbills. It should be possible to get over 160 species. We will see what
we can do next year D.V.

The team was made up of Norma Sheridan, Dave Maxwell, Mavis Skinner, Betty
Waterson, Noel & Jonathan Taylor, Peter Disher, John Nankervis, Geoff
Leslie, John Pople, Lydia & Chris Coleborn and Sheryl and Michael O'Brien.

We all had a great day.

Trust all have a safe, peaceful and happy holiday period.

Regards,

Chris Coleborn
