Birding Experiences - I very much liked Terrance's description of his
relationship with the Boobook. Hilary and I once had an injured Barking
Owl that would go to sleep in our arms if we stroked its breast.
I've seen many special birds this year but my award would have to go to
that crazy Bush Stone-curlew down stairs. Gribble survived the indignity
of a brisk dog wash (Sarah got so enthusiastic she actually pressed the
bird into the dirt); it lies out in the open on its side legs stretched
out, eyes shut and everyone thinks it's dead. It perches on its ankle
joints with no other part touching the ground. Don't know how the bird
does it!
Oh of course there was the part-blind immature White-gaped Honeyeater
that turned up at our feeding station to be fed by hand. And the
Orange-footed Scrubfowl that marches up the steps as if it's taken out a
lease on the place.
Three Aboriginal grandchildren are coming to stay Christmas Eve, Solitia,
Shauna and Angie, aged 4,6 and 9. They've had something of a bad time.
If anyone out there would care to send them a greeting by email I'm sure
they would be delighted.
My very best wishes to all, especially those of you I've come to regard
as soulmates if not friends.
