A report of a strange bird at Eco Beach Resort on the eastern shores of
Roebuck Bay had Broome Bird Observatory warden Adrian Boyle and local
consulting ornithologist Chris Hassell hot footing it out there yesterday
Fri 17th Dec. On arrival they found fisherman Dan O'Sullivan had discovered
an exhausted Abbott's Booby Papasula abbotti resting in a tree near one of
the accommodation units. More than likely blown off course by Cyclones John
or Ilsa the bird was photographed and processed by Adrian and Chris and
after a few meals of fresh fish will hopefully be able to return to its home
on Christmas Island.
This is definitely a new bird for the Broome area and a possible first for
the Australian mainland.
