Andrew Thelander sought advice on the impact of improving the shrub layer
of eucalypt remnants on Noisy Miner poulations.
In general, there is mounting evidence that allowing understorey
regeneration in eucalypt remnants works against the Noisy Miner population,
and favours other bush birds. However, if one makes the mistake of planting
non-indigenous shrubs, specially hybrid grevilleas and melaleucas cunningly
designed to flower for most of the year, you may have the opposite effect.
Likewise with West Australian winter-flowering species.
ie it is essential to use only locally indigenous species in any vegetation
rehabilitation work, and to include ground-layer species such as grasses,
sedges, herbs etc, as well as shrubs.
Advice about the appropriate species can be obtained from your local parks
and wildlife service, Greening Australia advisor, or field naturalists
club. Some nurseries specialise in locally indigenous species and offer
good advice, but generally the nursery trade has been extremely
disappointing in developing a conservation ethic or knowledge base.
