Excellent rave Michael and certainly lots of good ideas. Shouldn't Birds Australia and BOCA take this on? They are the only two national orgs with sufficient necessary resources to even look at it. BA did exceptionally well with their national appeal for Gluepot funding raising $300,000 in just a few months, and they are doing well with the present atlas project. It will take an org. with that sort of status to make it work. I agree, the whole thing needs a much higher public profile to get many more people involved, and this may even help the pollies recognise the need, sit up, and get behind conservation causes.
