Dear netters,

The first deadline for contributions (31 Oct. 1999) for 1998 records for VBR
has passed. It has to be said, that with few exceptions, the response is
very disappointing. I exempt from this some birding-aussers, e.g. Steve
Clark, Michael Norris and a few others. At this rate, if I do not receive
sufficient submissions to make the project viable, BEFORE THE END OF JANUARY
2000, the project will collapse.

Please bear in mind it is not possible for a couple of people in Melbourne
to sift though Atlas records to pick out the important stuff. Except for
obvious rarities and extensions of range we are dependent upon local birders
familiar with their local birds - for example, of several (migratory)
species reported in much larger numbers than usual in northern Vic. this
spring, only Pied Honeyeaters would be picked out as unusual by scrutiny of
Atlas records- because all the others have been seen there before and not
unusual in the distributional sense. The point is that NUMBERS visiting this
year seem much larger than usual, and this is what needs to be documented.

Because notice of the new VBR has been posted on birding-aus, in June 1999
Vic. Babbler and in August 1999 Bird Observer, that doesn't leave many of us
left with an excuse for not knowing about it.

Forms and instructions available from your local Atlas Regional Organiser,
Birds Australia National Office, BOCA HQ, or submit via the web under the
research link of Birds Australia homepage <http://www.birdsaustralia.com.au>.

It is not an onerous task to submit two or three of your most interesting
records for 1998. You do write down your sightings in notebooks don't you?
