Hi I have usually associated Crested Shrike-tits with riverine eucalypt trees, often Manna Gums (E. viminalis) and Swamp Gums (E. ovata), but always with eucs that have decorticating bark. I have often been alerted to their presence by their call (I'm often a birdlistener), but also by the sound of bark being prised off. Last August, I observed two CSTs feeding in the foliage of a large Grey Box (E. microcarpa), in farmland on the north side of Benalla. They appeared to be removing lerps from the leaves. Grey Box has decorticating bark, but only on the smaller, outer branches. I was surprised to see CSTs in such an area, but it does support others' observations of the birds in a variety of habitats. cheers Ian To unsubscribe from this list, please send a message to Include ONLY "unsubscribe birding-aus" in the message body (without the quotes) |
