Folks,

A work colleague has told me of finding a deceased, banded bird in Thornbury
last week. Unfortunately the carcase has been disposed of, but the band carries
the legend "VNC 97 150". The bird was sparrowish in size, but slimmer in build,
with a generally finch-shaped bill. It was black on top and white below, with
some yellow on the neck or back. She has unsuccessfully searched a field guide
but has not found it. I suggested New Holland Honeyeater but she is reasonably
confident that it did not have a honeyeater-type bill. She also did not think
it had the stripy appearance of a New Holland Honeyeater. It may be an aviary
escapee of some sort. Can anyone birding-aus possibly suggest what the answer
to this puzzle might be?

Much obliged for any assistance (this colleague is a generous sponsor of my
Twitchathon team so I want to keep her on-side!)

Regards,

     Jack Krohn.
