For Melbourne people the Devilbend Reservoir on the Mornington Peninsula
is probably the most reliable spot to view G.C.Grebes.
I do a waterbird count there once a year and they are always present
often in large numbers.
Melbourne Water has plans to decommission Devilbend reservoir and to
sell it off.
It is a vitally important wetland and is of state significance because
of the large numbers of Blue Billed Ducks that are found there and of
course the Great Crested which I think everyone would agree are not
common anywhere within their range.
Privatisation would be disasterous for the waterbird population of
Devilbend.
There are moves to lobby the government to retain it as a
reserve,excluding boating activities(I hope!)
I'm hoping the change of government might put a new perspective on the
issue.
I would appreciate a few letters to the new Labour Government or
Melbourne water.
