Howdy doody.
Re Great Crested Grebes: I saw my first ones at Lake
Wendouree, Ballarat, many moons ago (cf Anthea
Fleming's posting). They were in non-breeding plumage,
and I don't think I've seen them in non-breeding
plumage since (cf Niven McCrie, g'day Niv). I've
always found them to be locally common in SE
Queensland when I was living there.
And re performing Musk Duck (Anthea again), I observed
this phenomenon with David Andrew in late 1995, I
think, and wrote it up in his then-fledgling
Australian Birding. It was, without doubt, one of the
funniest things I have ever seen.
