When John McKean started up Cosmic Flashes (this journal was the forerunner
of "Australian Birding") back in the 70's there were four categories of
ticking. Birders today may be interested in how ticking was categorised 25
years ago.
A = Seen live within Australia and its Territories, not including introduced
species.
B = Seen live within Australia and its Territories, including introduced
species.
C = Including species seen overseas on the Australian list.
D = Dead birds included.
In those days 600A and 600B lists were often referred to in discussion as
very few people had 600A lists.
Territories such as Macquarie Island and Christmas Island were just a dream
and 200 kms offshore was the limit. A line through the middle of Torres
Strait was the boundary in that area.
Another form of ticking John Mckean and I had, plus a few others, was
multiple State tick lists. That is, add up your totals for all States as one
figure. As other people have said there are endless forms of ticking and it
really is up to the individual.
