G'day All,
Just received a message from a member of the Defence Force
regarding problems using the word 'Ninox' for a future project
.
I am sure any comments regarding this will be gratefully
received by Ron please reply to him directly on the email address provided, his
message follows our address, I will send the attachment mentioned to anyone
requiring it.
Good Morning,
I wonder if you can assist
me. I am part of an Australian Defence Force group in the Defence
Acquisition Organisation (DAO) and working on a project called Project
NINOX. The project consists of the following 5
major projects: Ground Surveillance Radars (GSR) Night Fighting
Equipment (NFE) Perimeter Surveillance Equipment (PSE) Thermal
Surveillance Systems (TSS) Unattended Ground Sensors (UGS) You may wish to
visit our web site at www.dod.gov.au/ninox for
further background and a picture of the owl we have adopted as our
emblem. It is unclassified.
However, the project was named NINOX
because of the relationship of the nature of the equipment to the owl and the
following claim was made, which is stated on our monthly Newsletter:
"Project NINOX is named after the Ninox Owl - an aggressive
Australian hunting owl."
I have attached a copy of our
Newsletter on which the owl is depicted.
The validity of the above
statement is now in question for it is being stated that NINOX is Latin for
any owl and that we should be specifying that it is the Ninox Strenua
(Powerful Owl) which we seem to have depicted on our stationery, web page and
newsletter.
>From my limited research, I feel that NINOX is a species
of owl and is not Latin for any owl but we may need to amend our claim in the
above (Newsletter) statement.
Could you provide info on the above or
indicate where I might go to find out what we need our statement to read to
make it correct, if it is incorrect. If you e-mail me you do not need to
include the SEC: UNCLASSIFIED in the subject. We only need to put that
on to send e-mail messages outside the Defence environment.
Thanks
& Regards,
