For those who haven't discovered this little gem of a National Park, it is
in the central north of Victoria. The nearest town is Mitiamo. You can get
to the Park from the south via Bendigo, or from the east via Echuca. It was
only declared a National Park last year, and apart from containing one of
the largest standing White Pine forest in Victoia, (it includes stands of
Grey and Yellow Box too, and various understory woodland plants such as
hopbush and Gold dust Wattle, and a selection of other native flora. It also
has one of the largest remaining native grasslands in Victoria too. This
section was recently purchased from a local private land-holder. The
Plains-Wanderer is found on this new section. Some local birdos have
periodic surveys for the Plains-Wanderers. We work in with the ranger in
charge. On our last one several months ago, we found nine birds in a matter
of several hours, including a male with two half grown young - an immature
male and female. It was great! It is not a large National Park, but well
worth a visit. The areas around the large granite outcrops, such as Mt.
Terrick, Regals Rock and Bennet's Rock are good birding places.
The ranger in charge, Mark Tscharke, will be able to provide further
information. He can be contacted on (03) 54503951 or e-mail:
Hope this helps Malcolm?
