I'd echo Andy's observations. At Tresco West Bushland Reserve, a mallee
remnant in a sea of wheatfields a couple of km behind the township of Lake
Boga, 15 east of Swan Hill in NW Victoria, there are Variegated, Superb and
White-winged Fairy-wrens. The WWFW did not overlap with the other two
species, sticking to the grassy, open saltbush shrublands around the salt
lake there. The distinction between VFW and SFW habitats was less distinct,
but it seemed that SFWs remain more on the edges of the mallee with the VFW
sticking to more to the interior.
By the way, if anyone is up that way and lookign for a bit of birding, this
is about the only decent bit of mallee nearby. It is only maybe 30 ha of
mallee bordered by a salt lake and golf course (that is only maintained in
winter). The diversity of habitat and the refuge this place must be in the
surrounding agricultural land, means there can be terrific diversity at
times - spring is definitely best - with species including Crimson Chat,
zillions of White-browed Woodswallow, Rainbow Bee-eater, button-quail (can't
remember which one), Singing and Spiney-cheeked HE, Pelicans, various
waders, Black Swans, grebes galore, White-browed Babblers, Red-rumped
Parrots et al.
