John: Last I heard "Orange-fronted Parakeet" was shown to be a hybrid of Yellow-fronted and Red-crowned Parakeets, the latter rather scarce on the mainland (or Mainland, as South Islanders would have it!), with characters inherited on a simple Mendelian basis. This would explain the scattered sightings. The paper is in Notornis. I'll get the citation when I get home and post it. Not to say it wouldn't be an interesting bird to look at!!
