Dear All,
I'd like to lend my support to Les Thyer and Maureen Cooperin the matter of
the Barnes Creek mangroves.
Consider the discussion last week, in which it was noted that sometimes
when you can't get any action locally, you might get some response from
outside pressure.
Many subscribers to birding-aus will have spent their hard-earned dollars
in Mackay when chasing the Eungella Honeyeater. Now Mackay needs our
outside help. Any of you who have been to Mackay and seen the extent of
agriculture in the region will understand that an environmentalist's lot is
a lonely lot in Mackay.
These mangroves might or might not be the most significant patch of remnant
vegetation in the world, but their removal will be another cut in the
insidious death by a thousand cuts, which is being forced upon us by the
government and an apathetic public.
Please support them by writing to the Mackay Council, and Qld ministers for
transport and environment, as outlined in their message. It wouldn't be a
bad idea to hit the Minister for Tourism, too. The Eungella Honeyeater must
account for a noteworthy input into the Mackay tourism coffers.
Cheers,
Jill
