Hi Birders,
Lindsey Smith in his recent note to Birding-aus made the comment that
Northern Giant Petrels were much more common in NSW than the NSW
Rarities Committee would lead us to believe. As a member of the NSW
Ornithological Rarities Committee I can say:

1. The Northern Giant petrel is NOT on the Review List for NSW (ie it is
not classed as a "rarity").

2. However in 1998 Committee members discussed whether the bird should
be on the Review List because of the apparent lack of published
observations since the early and mid 1990's and the bird was not being
reported on the Sydney and Wollongong pelagics.

3. Since 1998 there have been more reports published and observations
from sea-watchers and pelagics, perhaps because of heighten awareness
because of our concern expressed in a report to member groups.
