Hi Lorne and other Birders,
There is no Little Penguin colony on Goat Island. The nearest breeding
colony is the colony at Spring Cove/Manly Cove in the North Harbour area
(20-30 pairs), otherwise they nest at Lion Island in the mouth of the
Hawkesbury or south of Sydney on the Five Islands off Port Kembla.
Fiona Mandelc handles oil-spill issues for the NPWS, tel 02 95856444. As I
understand only 3 Penguins and 2 cormorants were affected because the oil
was primarily light crude and not heavy crude, and the area of th spill was
not near the main bird areas of the Harbour ei further up the Parramatta
River or in the North Harbour area! However even if only one penguin is
affected it is one penguin too many!
