Quite right, Laurence & Leanne: Aoraki it is! I was brought up to believe it was Aorangi ("Cloud-Piercer") too, as portrayed on an early '70s NZ dollar coin, but last year in a visit there, I found the name to be Aoraki. When I asked about it, I was informed that Aoraki was the name given by the local Maoris and therefore had priority; Aorangi, they said, was the name given by North Island Maoris - therefore invalid!
