Whilst birding-aus has been exploding with the questons of 'to capitalise
or not to capitalise', I thought that another similar gripe might not go
amiss.
I've just been reading soem literature from CSIRO Wildlife about Richard
Schodde's forthcoming catalogue of sub-species of birds. He has issued this
becuase he believes that we shoudl be concentrating on conserving not only
the 800 or so species on the Australian list, but all the sub-species too.
Well, hear, hear to that, but he describes these subspecies as
'ultra-taxa'; I know what he means, but I don't think that 'ultra' means
that, and a consultation with the OED has reinforced this view. I think he
means the 'ultimate taxa', rather.
So, before the publication that introduces this usage is even published,
could we begin to avoid using it?
