Surely the term "red kangaroo" or, for that matter, "red-tailed black cockatoo", could refer to any animal that fits the description, whereas Red Kangaroo or Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo refers to a particular species. I can't see how there can be any problem/argument in scientific circles.
