Today I received another unconfirmed report of a Powerful Owl near the foreshore in SE Melbourne (this time Beaumaris). I have a report from a good observer in this general area of one in a September and other scattered reports from June and August. Last year the Bird Observer reported one in nearby Mentone in February and there was a letter in the Melbourne paper, The Age, of one near Albert Park around July, 1995. Do any of you have good records of this species around here: the reports are frequent enough to suggest regular winter migration and even breeding in the area? Michael Norris Hampton, Vic.
