Do people know of a group called Friends of the Elm in Melbourne? Did you know they are trying to get Barry Humphries on side as spokesperson, due to the lack of action by the Government over the destruction of these trees by the Elm Beetle?
Going along with this logic I am thinking of starting up another group..."Friends of the European Rabbit and Fox", to prevent the intentional culling of these animals in Australia. Then maybe I'll start up Friends of the Oak Tree, then Friends of Water Buffalo and Friends of the Jacaranda.
I wish the Elm Beetle the greatest of success in destroying every last Elm Tree in Melbourne.
If I want to see an Oak, Elm or American Pine, I can take a holiday to the appropriate country to do so. I tried to figure out why someone would want to protect Elm's in Melbourne and came up with two possible reasons.
1)    They ignorantly think they are doing the environment a favour by protecting 'trees'.
2)    They are in areas where the trees add value to their properties...so effectively they are protecting them for self centred reasons.
If we are so patriotic, as we like to think we are, why is the Eucalypt and other natives in relative obscurity around the CBD. Are we Australian or European?
It is a shame that a walk along the Yarra, is underneath Oak trees along with Melbourne's 'Gateway', St Kilda Rd, also lined with Oaks.
