Wollongong, NSW Pelagic Trip Report, 10th July 1999
Conditions:
Departed at 7.15 am and returned at approx. 4.30 pm.
Sea Conditions: Sea southerly, 1 to 2 metres on a 1 - 1.5 metre swell.
Weather: Cool south southwesterly winds, generally overcast with some sunny
periods later. Air temperature 12 to 18 °C.
Wind: up to 20 knots.
Water temperature 15.3 to 19.6 degrees C.
Primary chumming location 34'30 - 151'22.
Summary:
Due to popular demand another pelagic trip from Wollongong had to be
organised. Once again we had a very good trip albeit somewhat less
fantastic (in the literal sense) than the previous 2 trips. Even after 5
days of anticyclonic weather there were many interesting birds in the area,
perhaps some birds arrived with the weak trough of low pressure that moved
through the area on the 9 & 10th.
The last week's Wollongong Pelagic increased the number of species recorded
from the Sandra K to some 93 species of seabird and it was with great
anticipation that we headed out to sea. Only 25 minutes later a Southern
Fulmar spotted the boat and pushed its way to the front of the throng
feeding on our berley. After 20+ min of photography, ooohing and aahing
the bird was captured, banded and released by SOSSA. Completly unconcerned
by the whole process, the bird followed the boat for a further 40 minutes
delighting all on board and creating a boom for the photographic supplies
market. Other rarities for NSW waters were observed, namely, Soft-plumaged
Petrel, Salvin's Prion and Black-bellied Storm-Petrel.
