Hi all,
Most waders have gone through a whole bunch of scientific names .Even
by 1888, the Grey Plover had gone through 24 names! Would anyone now
recognise Vanellus griseus or Tringa helveticus as a Grey Plover?
Seehbohm's book "The geographical distribution of the
Charadriidae - plovers, sandpipers, snipes" (1888) refers to the
Hooded Plover as the Hooded Ringed Plover, Charadrius monachus.
He lists four synonymns:
Charadrius cucullatus, Vieillot, N. Dict. d'Hist. Nat xxvii. p. 136
(1818)
Charadrius monachus, Geoffr. fide Wagler, Syst. Av. p. 60 (1827)
AEgialitis monachus (Wagler), Gould, Syn. Birds Austr. pl. 32. fig. 2
(1837)
Hiaticula monacha (Wagler), Gray, List Birds brit. Mus. iii. p. 70
(1844)
