Hi all,
Not a great deal happening at the
moment.
One of David Geerings wing tagged
Intermediate Egrets turned up last week
and is still present at the Cairns
Airport. It was tagged at Lawrence (on
the Clarence river, northern NSW),
possibly in 1991.
Intermediate Egrets have invaded the
place with over 50 at Cairns Airport and
the Esplanade.
Australian White-Ibis along with
Straw-necked Ibis, Intermediate Egrets
and Little Egrets are roosting in trees
by the old council buildings in the city
centre. A recent count had over 200 ibis
coming in for the night.
The last week has seen a few raptors
appearing at Cairns Airport, Brown
Falcon (not common on the coast),
Australian Goshawk (1 adult + 1 juv) and
too many Black Kites along with the
residents, Peregrine Falcon, Osprey,
Brahminy Kite, Australian Kestrel and
White-bellied Sea-Eagle.
6 Australian Pratincoles were present at
Cairns Airport 7-9th June also present
was an adult Great-billed Heron on 19th
June. This one hangs around the Barron
River mouth and lower reaches below the
road bridge (Capt.Cook Hwy.).
80+ Double-eyed Fig-Parrots were coming
in of an evening to roost in a big tree
opposite our house for at least 3 weeks
but they seem to have moved on in the
last few days.
All for now
