Hi all,

1999 has been an incredible contrast to 1998 for Swift Parrots. Of course
there are many results still to come in but here's the rundown.

A staggering 450 at Killawarra State Forest. David Geering assures me this
is correct.
100 at Chiltern
50 at Moonabel in western Victoria (Yellow Box lerp infestation)
50 at Jallukar State Forest in western Victoria (Yellow Gum nectar)

But how about this:

Ne Victoria May 98 survey : 15 birds May 99 (to date)
: 564 birds
Maryborugh-Dunolly May 98 survey: 285 birds May 99 (to date): 0 birds
Bendigo area May 98 survey 85 birds May 99 (to date) 0
birds
Rushworth May 98: 78 birds May 99: 11
birds
St.Arnaud May 98: 2 birds May 99:
129 birds

Makes you think there just may be a slight chance that there is enormous
variation in the distribution of these birds between years. The coverage
of these areas has not varied markedly in the last 12 months. Isn't that
remarkable?

I have received a few records from NSW, and will start making comparisons
for NSW 98/99 as well. The Swifties are back in the Capertee in numbers
for the third time in five years.

I will be away for the rest of this week looking for the Swift Parrots that
have come into the Stawell area, west of Bendigo. Information on their
foraging behaviour in this part of the world has not been collected before.
It will be a fascinating few days I hope.

Keep the emails rolling in, I look forward to reading them on Monday.

Simon K.
