A report has come in from Godfrey Thomas, of Tewantin (Noosa), SEQld. I
guess Noosa would be about 130-150km N of Brisbane.

On 3rd May, at 4pm, a flock of about a dozen Swift Parrots flew over his
home, heading north.

Godfrey is an experienced birder, and had never seen Swift Parrots before.
He said they passed about 50 metres above him. He said he was struck by the
very long tails. He consulted his field guide immediately, and is certain
of his identification. He also mentioned a zigzag flight pattern.

Godfrey has only recently moved to Tewantin from Bundaberg, and did not
realise the local significance of his sighting. In fact he rang me on
another matter entirely, and then asked, "What do you know about Swift
Parrots?" I replied, "Never seen one, why?" and so out it came.

I asked Valda McLean, of Noosa Parks Assn, to try to check it out. She was
very sceptical about the report, but has just phoned me to say that, after
meeting Godfrey and seeing the site, she is now convinced that Godfrey has
not made a mistake.

If Simon Kennedy is reading this, I will send Godfrey the necessary forms
today, and if you need to speak to Godfrey, contact me. I won't put his
contact details online.

So, Tom, Trevor, there's a new local bird for you to chase!

Cheers,

Jill
