Dear Mike,
The depopulation of poultry in the infected area at Mangrove Mountain
continues and at Staurday evening appox 1.9 million birds had been
killed on the commercial poultry farms with about 100,000 birds to go.
It is expected that all birds will be killed by Monday. The destruction
of backyard fowls and avairy birds commenced on Thursday 6/5/99 and
should be completed early next week. There are 30 commercial poultry
farms, 1 Ostrich farm, 1 commercial duck farm and a commercial pigeon
(for the table) farm affected. There are about 130 backyard fowl and
avairy bird properties in the infected area. The last outbreak of the
diseased was detected on a farm within the infected area last Monday,
and those birds were depopulated by today. I think in the end there were
8 infected properties, 6 suspicious properties and the remainder
possible infected properties. Adhoc sampling of 50+ wildbirds since the
date of the first infected property being known (1/4/99) has not
detected NDV. A more systematic sampling program of wild birds is about
to commence.
