Tony,
Up to date info on Gurney's below. it looks like some letter writing may be
in order to persuade the Thai gov't to continue funding the project as DOF
have pulled out. . We had a big discussion on OBC council about it last week
and are all keen to do whatever we can to raise awareness. Against this we
have to be careful not to alienate the Thai authorities prior to the
meeting. I will send addresses to write to as soon as they arrive. We are
keeping the campaign small until after the meeting with Birdlife in May.
Best wishes
Marcus
Ps: are you an Obc member?

Dear Brian Sykes,
Thanks for your e-mail and about the Gurney’s Pitta. I also heard
something similar to the messages that you send to me but it just a rumor
from some bad people in the Gurney’s Pitta areas. The rumor began from mid
of last year. For some reasons, the farmers and some people of the Royal
Forest Department do not want the conservation project (Gurney’s Pitta
Project) to work in Khao Pra Bangkhram (Khao Nor Chuchi) Wildlife
Sanctuary so they try to push every ways to get rid of Phil and the project.
Finally, the bad sides win. Phil gave up the project and he now works on
a survey project in Vietnam. The Danish conservation group (DANCED by DOF)
still try to continue the conservation project to save the Gurney’s Pitta by
willing to give funds to the big hand of the Royal Forest Department (RFD).
Some of the RFD said that they can do better job the previous project.
There is no progress about this topic but I think RFD will carry on the
project to save this species and their habitats by get the support from
Denmark. There are no evidences that Gurney’s Pitta had gone down to 5
pairs but the birds are very difficult to see now. Nobody knows how many
individuals of Gurney’s Pitta are in Khao Nor Chuchi Lowland Forest. They
may have 20 pairs or more or gone down to less than 5 pairs. I don’t
believe that the farmers are paying the guards to shoot Pittas (most people
in the village are good man only some are bad) so that the site no longer
has any conservation value. I heard that the new chief of the sanctuary is
a good man. He will not allow villagers to should Gurney’s Pitta and burnt
secondary forest inside the sanctuary boundary.
OBC can help to correct this worrying news by pass the above
messages to BirdLife International and birders who care about this birds.
Yours sincerely,

Hello Uthai
There are some rather worrying messages circulating on one of the UK
Internet mailing lists. These messages have originated from
Australia I
think. They are reporting that:
1) There are now only 5 pairs of Pittas left.
2) The farmers are paying the guards to shoot Pittas so that the
site no
longer has any conservation value.
3) The farmers are burning secondary growth and cutting more tracks
into the
area.
4) The Danish[?] conservation group has pulled out of the site and
given up.
We had heard that the situation was not good in 1997, but there had
not been
much information. Can you ask Phil to send an up date if possible
and if
there is anything that OBC can do through the contacts we have, we
will
activate any help we can.
I was a little surprised to hear of this message [from Richard Eden]
Phil
has always let people know in the past when some thing bad happens
and asks
for help to lobby the authorities.
I contact you now in case Phil is away.
Hope you can reply quickly.
