The recent talk re "Where to watch birds in Australasia & Oceania" prompted
me to get my copy out and have a bit of a read whereupon I found the
following (to my mind) astounding statement of fact: "In the wet eastern
forests <of Australia> some people have almost been killed by leeches...."
Is there even the slightest element of truth to this? I'll have to be a lot
more careful in future! Maybe I should take a leech-eating ibis with me
when I go out birding. As if it's not scarey enough with all those huge
poisonous snakes and spiders out there ;-)
By the way, I am not putting the book down. I think it's pretty good for
what it is but I seriously doubt anyone would come to Australia carrying
only this reference. Further research would be an obvious prerequisite. For
an Australian the Oceania section is the most useful. I wonder why he
didn't do a separate volume on Australia...
cheers,
Susan
