Martin and birding-aus,
Just to follow on from your question about current Cassowary status and
recent reports.
The three volunteer community organisations putting a big effort into
Cassowary conservation are 'Daintree Cassowary Care Group' centred in
the Daintree region, 'Kuranda EnviroCare' centred at Kuranda and 'C4'
(which stands for Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation)
centred at Mission Beach. The Wet Tropics Authority is working with
these groups and would have the up to date data. If you want contacts
and details, I can send them to you. (C4 was represented on 7.30
Report).
The Cassowary is undoubtedly a big worry in this part of the world. The
7.30 report was a good one and ABC Regional Radio did a good follow up
the next morning. However, as with all these issues, politics is being
played.

If anyone is travelling through the Wet Tropics, it is worthwhile to
stop at C4's display and shop in Mission Beach (easy to find) and the
Kuranda EnviroCare shop which is in the Kingfisher Rainforest Resort
building on the Kuranda-Mareeba Road (easy to see on left if coming out
of Kuranda - if making phone-email contact don't contact the Resort -
they have kindly made room available but don't take messages. I can
supply addresses). These are manned voluntarily and all funds raised go
to Cassowary and other conservation.
