Wednesday 14 April
Daintree River ( N of Cairns) trip with Chris Dahlberg. Excellent as
ever, highlights being 3 pairs of Azure Kingfishers perched close by and
flapping their wings at each other, 2 male and a female Gould's
Bronze-Cuckoo, an immature Great-billed Heron, a single Black Bittern
and a super Peregrine that gave a Rainbow Lorikeet a heart attack with a
power dive upon it. Also a sizeable Saltwater Croc and Amethystine
Python.
A foray up the Mt Lewis approach track gave us great views of 2
Blue-faced Finch feeding on grass seeds amongst a big patch of wild
raspberries and lantana. This place is 800m from where the tar ends, or
4 km from the ever hospitable Ron Stannard's Office at Kingfisher Park.
There is a sizeable washout on the track at the site, marked by a post
with a yellow tape around it, look down the hillside to the left and
listen for them calling, they have a quiet and easily overlooked rather
dry rapid "tut tut tut" or "ttt" call.
A pair of Australian Bustards along the East Mary Road finished the day
nicely, though the long grass makes finding them problematic at present
and it's a far cry from the 72 we counted here and along the West Mary
Road back in mid-January.
happy birding
