Regarding Anthea's comments about Sweet Pittosporum (P.undulatum) at
Morwell National Park, this species is thought by some to be native to the
Strzeleckis and possibly near Heyfield (all west of Glenaladale, near
Bairnsdale). I've seen some gullies in the east Strzeleckis that are
dominated by Pittosporum (appearing like a type of Warm Temperate
Rainforest found not far to the north-east). In an area near Heyfield
(north of the Latrobe Valley), the Pittosporum growth forms what may be a
type of (don't laugh) Dry Rainforest in a dry, rocky gorge.
In late 1997, I recorded 2 Brown Gerygones in mixed Pittosporum/Blackwood
(Acacia melanoxylon) gully forest (perhaps a type of Cool Temperate
Rainforest?) near Mount Worth State Park, which is close to Morwell
National Park. If these Gerygones keep spreading further westward as recent
records show, then Melburnians could well be invaded by numbers of these
birds enjoying the many introduced Pittosporums planted there!
Cheers
George
PS Who would have thought that there were more than 3 types of rainforest
in Victoria???!!!
