Hi all,
Was surprised not to receive any response to the message I posted on the
31st March. It seems most unlikely that I am the only birding-aus subscriber
that has observed Black-eared Miners in the last five years or so! I repeat
the request below in the hope that all those Black-eared Miner observers out
there were off-line at the time.

Many thanks

Just the other day we were excited to receive information on the continued
existence of a fourth Black-eared Miner (Bem) colony in Victoria.
Surprisingly it was at a site known to previously support Bems. They were
not detected by field workers at this site in the late eighties and early
nineties and were consequently believed to have vanished. It now seems
likely individuals have always persisted in this area.

Proposed actions from the recovery plan for this critically endangered
species include translocations of birds from either the larger population
centered around Gluepot and Calperum stations in SA or the captive
population. Objectives being to both supplement isolated colonies and
establish new colonies in large tracts of mallee were conditions are now
believed to be suitable (i.e.; where mallee is approaching a suitable
post-fire age) such as the Sunset country (NW Vic)

In view of these recovery objectives the location of any other colonies in
Victoria, and for that matter NSW and SA is critical information to ensure
the most strategic areas be selected to receive translocated Bems. Any
records of Black-eared Miners made in the last few years are thus very
important. An accurate location, date, number of birds involved, an
assessment of quality (hybrids, bems or Yellow-throated Miners present)
would be ideal but any information would be gratefully received.
