Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for period ending 6 April (some reports are of earlier obs).

NB CANBERRA IS A LARGISH TOWN APPROXIMATELY 250K SW OF SYDNEY.....

MORE VERY AUTUMNY THINGS - eg MOVEMENTS (IN AND OUT), THE TYPICAL WINTER
FEEDING FLOCKS OF SMALL INSECTIVORES ARE FORMING ALREADY, BUT ALSO SOME
'HOLD-OUTS', LATE RECORDS AND BREEDING ETC.

BLACK SWAN CYGNETS 15/3 clutch of young cygnets on Lake Burley
Griffin!! [I've given up trying to understand this season!]

RED WATTLEBIRDS 24/3 dependent young in suburban Kambah [ditto...]
                        but also considerable outward movement!

YELLOW-FACED HONEYEATERS 28/3 onwards: lots of outward movements all
over Canberra, including a couple of records of flocks of 2-300

NOISY FRIARBIRDS 21/3 & subsequent gathering and moving; one flock of
20-30

GERYGONES both species still present in numbers

DUSKY WOODSWALLOWS still present in several places

CATTLE EGRETS 5/4 4 at suburban Jerrabomberra wetlands [first return -
they leave in summer to breed 'elsewhere', and come back for winter]

STRIATED PARDALOTES many large flocks at Mulligans Flat NR (northern
outskirts of Canberra) [most of these summer in the mountains, coming down now]

SATIN BOWERBIRDS 5/4 back down from ranges in suburban Chapman

SUPERB FRUIT-DOVE!! 19/3, Aranda bushland (central Canberra) [this is
the 2nd record of this sp for Canberra; apparently occasional young birds
head the 'wrong way' in spring]

BOOBOOKS several records of birds calling in the suburbs in the past
couple of weeks [not clear why at this time of year!]

SPINE-TAILED SWIFTS 20/3 ~100 over suburban Kambah [this must be
getting close to their last hurrah]

INTERMEDIATE EGRET 20/3 & subsequent on suburban Kambah golf course

KOELS 11/3 pair in suburban Campbell Park
        28/3 3 calling in inner suburban O'Connor

SWIFT PARROTS UNCONFIRMED, but probably OK, report of 6 in southern
suburban Wanniassa
