White-throated Nightjars are migrating north through the Townsville (North
Queensland) region at the moment. So far 2 have turned up inside the
Engineering workshops at Queensland Rail's South Yards. This is the fourth
year they have been recorded there (attracted by the lights???? moths???)
and rail staff will once more rescue them as they glide down from the steel
rafters and release them at night further up river (the Ross River).
Yesterday Marleen Acton and I saw a Black Bittern at Gairloch (outside
Ingham) and a juvenile Bridled Tern was at the sandspit at Lucinda. Nothing
else of interest to report other than that the mangroves which were clear
felled at Dungeness (on the mainland adjacent to the southern end of
Hinchinbrook Island) are making a comeback with some plants already over 3
metres in height.
I'm off to White Mountains National Park (between Charters Towers and
Hughenden) for a couple of days of Atlassing. Happy Easter everyone.
