birding-aus I know that this is a bit off the track regarding the threads on the Snipes, but when I lived in Ballarat, I had a site with a much smaller population of Latham's Snipe. My best count was around 50 at the Miners Rest Swamp just northwest of Ballarat. This swamp had been drained many years before but was stillwet under foot. Cattle and horses grazed the swamp. When it became known that the snipe were there in such large numbers, the local shire remade the swamp and removed the drainage lines so as to conserve the habitat for the birds. I am unsure how this has worked in the long term as I left not long after it was completed. So my best wishes to the Birdo's in the Hunter Valley in their endeavours!!
